It will be appreciated that any layout of sidings
on the Reclamation at present is a difficult problem, as
all the available space has been used for the storage of
cargo originally destined for Shanghai. In the cir cum-
stances, the layout shown on plan 5.0. 1700 P. represented
the only possible arrangement.

The economics of the alternative schemes, from
the agons-Lits Company's point of view, are given below :-
SCHEME I.
Open Storage on the Reclamation in the vicinity of the sidings coloured red
on Plan 1700/P.
Lifting charges
Wooden Blocks and blocking
Shunting, haulage, and other
incidentals
(including alterations to one
locomotive to enable the coaches to be hauled)
$15,000
2,000
6.000
Total
$23,000
Plus Storage Charges at 3900 per month.
SCHEME II.
3torage on Sidings.
Cost of sidings
$25,450
(Estimated)
Free storage for 12 months; Waiving of
Shunting and other incidental charges.
No risk of damage in lifting.
No difficulties with regard to insurance.
It will be noticed that after three months, 3oheme II offers
advantages
financial advantages in addition to other/mзntioned above.
If second-hand material had been available when Scheme II
was put in hand, the cost would of course have been mich
lower, although I would point out that we have offered to
replace the new rails with suitable second-hand ones, at
any time the Wagons-Lits Company can procure the necessary
material.
